In 2011, i was travelling all around Syria, already with the war. I always felt safe, even in Deraa, the most troublesome city, where i came to go to Bosra. The city was full with tanks and guys on the roofs armed with Kalashnikovs and i was withdrawn from the city. There was also some problems in Homs and in Aleppo, but i hadn't any difficulty to stay there and visit the city. From Krak des Chevaliers, i was travelling to Deir Mar Musa, one of the oldest christian monasteries of the world. The monastery is in the mountains and i was going there to hike also. I got a lift in the highway from a military bus, full of soldiers, and after one truck left me on the road at the bottom of the mountain where the monastery is perched. I stayed there some days, hiking in the mountains and participating in the community life, making some tasks. The monastery was ecumenical, accepting all religions and atheists, like me. The Father Paolo Dall'Ogli was an amazing person, speaking fluently four languages, Italian, Arabic, French and English, with a tolerant view of life and religion.
We had different points of view about the political situation, but the mutual respect was genuine. I remember to think to myself, one day i will return and i will spend the Christmas here in this monastery.
Five years later, in the eve of Christmas, it is time to say goodbye. This is my plain tribute to a man of peace, who was also a man of religion. He disappeared and probably he was murdered by Isis. The news are contradictory, like heaven and earth. And i'm convinced that the true heaven for you it was earth and your love for human being.
So, dead or alive, may peace be with you!

O carreiro
era a via crucis
de um dia imenso-
e como um eremita
desavindo com o céu
o teu coração era o pó da terra
a luz derradeira do deserto
onde todas as fés
são dunas do mesmo deus

The path
was the Via Crucis
of an immense day-
and as a hermit
in conflict with the sky
your heart was the dust of the ground
the ultimate desert light
where all faiths
are dunes of the same-god
